German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the largest organisation promoting academic and scientific exchange in the world. Its annual budget is over 634 million euros, allowing the support of almost 135.000 Germans and foreigners in more than 250 scholarship programs, as well as maintaining visiting professors and lectors in more than 110 countries.

Since 1925, some 2.8 million people have received support from DAAD programs. Other important fronts of the agency’s work are the internationalization of German universities and the promotion of German language teaching abroad. The DAAD also acts as a mediator of German foreign scientific, university and development policy. Its programs also contribute to the establishment, strengthening and consolidation of education systems in developing countries.

In 2022, in every corner of Brazil, DAAD will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the opening of its regional office in Rio de Janeiro. Since 1972, DAAD’s work has provided Brazilian and German young people with mobility experience in the academic context and has supported experienced researchers from both countries in the development of bilateral research projects. DAAD works in close collaboration with its Brazilian partners. In addition to its office in Rio de Janeiro, DAAD has been operating in São Paulo since 2001, expanding the reach of DAAD’s activities and offering information on individual scholarships for study and research, as well as fostering institutional partnerships.
