German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the largest organisation promoting academic and scientific exchange in the world. Since its founding in 1925, DAAD has supported around 2.0 million scholars, both in Germany and other countries. Its functions go far beyond providing scholarships: DAAD propels the internationalization of higher education institutions in Germany, promotes the German language and German studies abroad, helps developing countries to establish effective universities and advises decision makers in matters of education policy, scientific cooperation and development.

Its annual budget is over 520 million euros, allowing the support of almost 140.000 Germans and foreigners, as well as maintaining visiting professors and lectors in more than 110 countries.

In Brazil, the DAAD has had a regional office since 1972 in Rio de Janeiro and an advisory office in São Paulo, located in the German Centre for Research and Innovation São Paulo (DWIH São Paulo).

The DAAD has maintained a long-standing partnership with the Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes), and with the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq); these are two of the most important Brazilian institutions for research support. A good example of that is the joint call of the PhD Scholarships in Germany or the PROBRAL Program (PPP), which finances joint research projects.
