German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the largest academic exchange organisation in the world. In 2024, the DAAD supported almost 140,000 Germans and foreigners in more than 250 scholarship programmes and held lectureships in 100 countries. Around 2.9 million people have been supported by the DAAD since 1950.

Other important areas of work are the communication of German foreign policy in the fields of science and higher education, the internationalisation of German universities, the promotion of the German language abroad and support in strengthening education systems in countries of the Global South. The DAAD has been active in Brazil since 1972 with an office in Rio de Janeiro, a representative office in São Paulo and, most recently, in Fortaleza. It offers young Brazilians and Germans academic mobility experiences and supports academics from both countries in the development of bilateral projects and in co-operation with Brazilian institutions.
