German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the largest organisation promoting academic and scientific exchange in the world. Since its founding in 1925, DAAD has supported more than 2.5 million scholars, both in Germany and other countries. Its functions go far beyond providing scholarships: DAAD propels the internationalization of higher education institutions in Germany, promotes the German language and German studies abroad, helps developing countries to establish effective universities and advises decision makers in matters of education policy, scientific cooperation and development.

Its annual budget is over 594 million euros, allowing the support of almost 145.000 Germans and foreigners in more than 250 scholarship programs, as well as maintaining visiting professors and lectors in more than 110 countries.

In Brazil, the DAAD has had a regional office since 1972 in Rio de Janeiro and an advisory office in São Paulo, located in the German Centre for Research and Innovation São Paulo (DWIH São Paulo).

In 2022, in every corner of Brazil, DAAD will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the opening of its regional office in Rio de Janeiro. Since 1972, DAAD’s work has provided Brazilian and German young people with mobility experience in the academic context and has supported experienced researchers from both countries in the development of bilateral research projects. DAAD works in close collaboration with its Brazilian partners.
