Freie Universität Berlin

Freie Universität Berlin is one of the universities of excellence in Germany: As part of the Berlin University Alliance, it has been permanently funded since 2019 in the “Excellence Strategy”, the new edition of the competition to promote top-level research. Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Technische Universität Berlin as well as Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin – have joined forces in the Berlin network. As one of six universities nationwide, Freie Universität had already been recognized as an excellent university in both rounds of the previous “Excellence Initiative” competition. In 2018, four new Clusters of Excellence were approved for a term of seven years. Recognized research rankings (THE/DFG) confirm the leading position of Freie Universität – especially in the humanities and social sciences.

The liaison offices of the Freie Universität are groundbreaking for a new quality of international cooperation. The office in São Paulo supports academics at Freie Universität in international networking and in expanding research collaborations in Brazil and Latin America, and informs students and researchers from the region about the university profile and funding opportunities.

In 2019 the Maria Sibylla Merian Center Conviviality Inequality in Latin America, led by an international consortium coordinated by Freie Universität, has entered its main phase, which guarantees funding until 2026. The research college, financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), is based at the Centro Brasileiro de Análise e Planejamento (CEBRAP) and the Universidade de São Paulo (USP).
