Freie Universität Berlin

Founded in 1948 in the divided city of Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin is the comprehensive university of the western part of the city. It is part of the Berlin University Alliance and is one of Germany’s universities of excellence.

Many rankings confirm its leading position, mainly in the fields of social and humanistic sciences. The university’s sustainable internationalization is strongly supported by its regional offices. The German Centre for Research and Innovation São Paulo (DWIH) São Paulo office supports researchers from the Freie Universität Berlin in establishing research collaborations in Brazil and Latin America. It also offers students and researchers in the region guidance on university programs and funding opportunities.

The consortium “Maria Sibylla Merian Centre Conviviality-Inequality in Latin America” is led by Freie Universität Berlin. The consortium is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and has been in its main phase since 2019. The research network is based at the Brazilian Center of Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP) and the University of São Paulo (USP).
