Baden-Württemberg Center for Brazil and Latin America of the University of Tübingen
The Baden-Württemberg Center for Brazil and Latin America of the University of Tübingen (BraLat) was established in July 2022, evolving from the Baden-Württembergisches Brasilien-Zentrum, which coordinated cooperation with a wide range of Brazilian universities since 2000. BraLat focuses on diversifying and intensifying research collaboration with Latin America, as well as supporting the creation of a Latin American academic network integrated by partners of the University of Tübingen.
Under the umbrella of the recently founded “Global South Hub” at the university, BraLat advises and supervises research projects, conducts exchange programs, and organizes events across various scientific disciplines. It is also responsible for several established funding programs with Brazilian agencies, including the Capes-Tübingen Chair. Since 2023, BraLat has been particularly dedicated to developing the German-Brazilian research network “Die Deutschsprachige Presse Brasiliens (1852 bis 1941)” (“The German-Language Press in Brazil, 1852 to 1941”), available at https://uni-tuebingen.de/de/278604. The four projects developed within this network aim to identify, digitize, catalogue, and scientifically analyze historical German-language newspapers and almanacs published in Brazil. In addition, BraLat has been organizing the “Brazil-Germany Symposium on Sustainable Development” every two years since 2003, in cooperation with external partners.
In the field of teaching, BraLat offers Portuguese language courses for German and international students. Additionally, it delivers block lectures on Medicinal Chemistry at two Brazilian universities. Activities in Brazil also include a month-long geo-ecological internship for Tübingen students, organized as part of the study module “Tropical Ecology of South America.” The internship program regularly includes a visit to the Pró-Mata research station. However, BraLat’s main focus lies in carrying out its own projects and programs that strengthen research cooperation with Latin America.
Furthermore, BraLat supports academic events organized by third parties. Through participation in international conferences and activities in Latin America, the center enhances the presence of the University of Tübingen in the region.
The University of Tübingen is one of Germany’s most renowned institutions for teaching and research, known for its academic tradition, international collaborations, and scientific innovation. As one of the country’s Excellence Universities, it belongs to a select group of institutions receiving additional funding for research and development.
